Albee Leads Writers Protest of Chinese Censorship
by Annie Shreffler
NEW YORK, NY August 06, 2008 —Edward Albee and other renowned writers will be reading the works of jailed Chinese writers tomorrow evening. It's part of an event organized by the Pen American Center to protest China's treatment of nearly 50 authors and journalists that the center says are imprisoned simply because of their writings.
Albee also criticized the American media for not doing more to cover what he calls China's overt censorship.
ALBEE: If we want to involve ourselves we can find out about it. I think it's responsibility every writer has to be socially and politically involved.
NARRATION: The free public reading is called "Bringing Down the Great Firewall of China: Silenced Writers Speak on the eve of the Olympics." It's tomorrow evening at 7 at the New School's Tishman Auditorium.
