McCain Turns to Vets to Burnish War Credentials
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY July 22, 2008 —As Sen. Barack Obama appears on TV screens shooting hoops with U.S. troops in Iraq, John McCain's campaign is trying to counter the Obama media blitz by enlisting millions of veterans.
WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more from Holmdel, N.J.
Veterans converged at the Garden State's Vietnam Veteran's Memorial to help launch New Jersey Vets for McCain.
Similar events are planned around the country as the McCain campaign targets the nation's 23 million veterans by highlighting Senator McCain's Vietnam War record and his time as a prisoner of war. In New Jersey alone there are 8O,OOO Vietnam-era veterans.
The highlight of today's event was a McCain video composed entirely of Sen. Obama's public comments on Iraq. It includes his prediction that the U.S. military surge would fail in Iraq.
In Holmdel, N.J., for WNYC I am Bob Hennelly.
