Paterson Dubious of MTA Fare Hike Plan

by Matthew Schuerman

NEW YORK, NY July 22, 2008 —Gov. David Paterson is not convinced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority needs to raise fares again.

Paterson, who appoints more members to the agency's board than anyone else, says the MTA needs to check its books again to see if there is any other way to balance its budget.

PATERSON: I don't think it's wise to impose a fare hike this soon on commuter’s right after we did the last time because this cannot become the new way the MTA solves problems.

REPORTER: The MTA will propose raising fares and tolls by an average 8 percent tomorrow, across the system.

The increase still has to be approved by the MTA board in December and would not go into effect until next July.

The agency hasn't explained how the increase would be spread out among subways and commuter rail roads, or among different types of MetroCards.

Fares already went up an average 3.85 percent this March.
