Weiner Wants to be Middle Class Hero
by Arun Venugopal
NEW YORK, NY July 22, 2008 —Congressman - and potential Mayoral candidate - Anthony Wiener says he's pro-development but is concerned about the toll that rising real estate costs are taking on middle class New Yorkers.
Speaking at a breakfast put on by Crain's New York Business, the Congressman praised Mayor Michael Bloomberg but said it's unfair to compare their business credentials.
WIENER: I want to be judged on who I am. And who I am is a middle class New Yorker who believes deep in his bones that one of the challenges, perhaps the existential threat this city faces is challenge to the middle class and those struggling to make it.
REPORTER: Rep. Wiener also criticized the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's proposal, expected tomorrow, to raise fares again next year.
He says the city should have more oversight of the agency.
