Cement Truck Drivers on Strike
by Jenna Flanagan
NEW YORK, NY July 02, 2008 —Hundreds of cement-truck drivers went on strike days before the Fourth of July holiday weekend, disrupting some of the largest construction projects in the city, including the World Trade Center site.
More than 400 drivers for Local 282, of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters walked out of talks with the Association of New York City Concrete Producers after the union's contract expired at 12:01 a.m. this morning.
John Quadrozzi, president of the Quadrozzi Concrete Corporation, says unions should know this is a difficult time financially for everybody and they should compromise.
QUADROZZI: It's not a time to take advantage of the fact, when we're all carrying the burden of high costs and so forth, and we all want to see projects like the World Trade Center site move forward as quickly as possible.
REPORTER: A spokesperson for cement-truck drivers union and the association of concrete producers says there have been ongoing and good faith efforts by both parties to reach an agreement that will be fair and equitable to all concerned.
