N.Y. Governor, Senate Majority Leader Tackle High Property Taxes
WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY July 01, 2008 —Gov. David Paterson had his first meeting with the new Senate Majority Leader, Dean Skelos. The two have agreed to aggressively tackle property taxes because, as the governor says, it's a top concern among voters.
PATERSON: As the new leader said, from Buffalo to Montauk, from Niagara Falls to Brooklyn, from Chattaqua and Cattaragas county, everyone's talking about the escalating property taxes.
REPORTER: The two said they're considering a property tax cap, and would try to resolve the issue within one month. Paterson says they don't want to see unions or schools suffer as a consequence, and if they can reach a point where "valid negotiations" are possible, he'll ask lawmakers to return to Albany to address the issue.
