Aerial Ads Affected by Economic Woes

by Ilya Marritz

NEW YORK, NY June 15, 2008 —As beach season begins, the nation's two biggest markets for aerial advertising are experiencing some turbulence.

REPORTER: Sun-seekers along the Jersey Shore and on Long Island will likely see fewer banner ads pulled by small aircraft this summer. Michael Arnold of Arnold Aerial says the poor economic climate is causing advertisers to cut back.

ARNOLD: Instead of buying entire summers like they have in the past, they're cherry-picking certain holidays like the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or they're flying every other weekend, instead of every weekend.

REPORTER: Airplane fuel prices are also squeezing aerial advertisers: a gallon costs about $1.20 more than it did last year. Despite the tough marker, Michael Arnold says there's one bright spot: diets and energy drinks are still advertising heavily.
