OTB Gets Last-Minute Reprieve
by Ilya Marritz
NEW YORK, NY June 13, 2008 —Off Track Betting will live another day in New York City. Governor Paterson announced that legislative leaders had reached a deal to save the troubled betting corporation. WNYC's Ilya Marritz has more.
REPORTER: Surrounded by lawmakers and labor leaders, Governor Paterson declared that OTB workers should show up for work on Monday.
That's the same day Paterson expects the Senate and Assembly to approve a state takeover of New York City OTB. Paterson didn't offer many specifics, but said he was confident the deal would hold.
PATERSON: This isn't a tentative agreement, we have an agreement, and we're working out a few of the details.
State Senator John Sabini will leave the legislature to oversee the transition as chair of the State Wagering Board. When asked why the Mayor wasn't there for the announcement, Governor Paterson noted that there were no racehorses there either.
For WNYC, I'm Ilya Marritz.
