Students Protest City Education Cuts
by Elaine Rivera
NEW YORK, NY June 05, 2008 —More than 100 public school teenagers and members of student groups rallied in front of City Hall to protest Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed $450 million budget cuts. The students say the mayor's plan will adversely impact their schools.
Education activists, parents and students argue that while the city is facing a drop in revenues the education budget shouldn't be touched. Brooklyn high school student Jaritza Amaris Giegel attended the rally. She says any cuts will be harmful.
GIEGEL: It pays for updated books, it pays for activities, so kids are interested in coming to the schools, it keeps neighborhood schools open because if one school closes down we lose teachers - schools are going be overcrowded.
REPORTER: Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says he's trying to free up restrictions how he can spend state money so each school will face a minimal cut. But education activists argue that if that happens, he will be taking away more money from lower performing schools to buffer cuts at higher performing schools.
