by Kathleen Horan
NEW YORK, NY June 02, 2008 —Gotta light...? If you need one for a cigarette, be prepared to see more of your money go 'up in smoke.' The state's new tax on cigarettes goes into effect tomorrow and a pack of smokes will go from $1.50 to $2.75 a pack. That means a pack will cost more than $8.
REPORTER: Brooklyn's Anthony Nixon says its about time to quit.
NIXON: When they go to $10, I'm quittin' - I'm not paying $10 for no cigarettes - that's like buying drugs on the street, that's like excuse my language, crack on the block for $10 on the street.
REPORTER: The state tax on cigarettes will make it the highest in the nation.
Officials say revenues from the tax will generate more than $265 million for health-related programs.
