NJ Senate Candidates Spar at Debate

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY May 30, 2008 — With just days to go before they face New Jersey voters, all three Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate came head-to-head for the first time last night.

The radio call-in debate featured sharp exchanges between the 84-year-old Senator Frank Lautenberg and 50-year-old Congressman Rob Andrews over Lautenberg's age and over Andrews high profile embrace of the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq.

Under aggressive questioning from Andrews, Lautenberg did concede he had made supportive comments about the Iraqi policy early on, but insisted he had consistently voted to oppose it.

Meanwhile, Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello used the forum to take both long time members of Congress to task for failing to do enough to reduce the nation's dependence on oil, while asserting that he was the only one of the three to oppose the war from the outset.

The trio will be at it again tonight on the New Jersey Network.

For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
