New York City is home to some of the world's most dynamic artists. Ear to Ear takes innovative musicians off the New York stages and into the studio for relaxed, insightful conversation, as they share their personal recordings with host David Garland. From Carnegie to Southpaw, guests are drawn from a broad range of backgrounds and genres, from classical to experimental and beyond.
Ear to Ear is part of WNYC's "The New Americans," a celebration of foreign-born artists, and is supported in part by the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

A fearless protagonist, John Zorn is renowned for his uncompromising music and resolute character — both of which have greatly influenced the progressive music scene. The multi-dimensional composer, performer, and improviser joins host David Garland to share samples from his mammoth music collection, and to talk about his most recent collaboration with American avant-garde playwright Richard Forman, entitled "Astronome: A Night at the Opera."

Ear to Ear: Phil Kline

Phil Kline marries modern technology to traditional acoustics with a flair, creating sound sculptures like the cult holiday tradition for multiple boomboxes, "Unsilent Night." The composer's 2004 release for the Cantaloupe label, "Zippo Songs," received international praise for its frank treatment of texts by Vietnam veterans — juxtaposed with the "Rumsfeld Songs," a wry setting of quotes from the former Defense Secretary.

Ear to Ear: Maria Schneider

Recently awarded a Grammy for her album "Cerulean Skies," composer/conductor Maria Schneider fronts the eponymous international ensemble, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. Schneider collaborates frequently with other jazz icons, including Gil Evans and Bob Brookmeyer, creating music that has been described as "evocative," "majestic," and "beyond categorization."

In addition to his solo work and frequent collaboration with innovative musicians like Anthony Braxton and Cecil Taylor, Bynum leads his own Trio, Sextet, and the nine-piece ensemble SpiderMonkey Strings.

Brooklyn based flautist Claire Chase has emerged as a gifted interpreter and performer of contemporary music, as well as an active entrepreneur of the experimental arts. Winner of the 2008 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Claire is the executive director and co founder of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), dedicated to presenting new works and expanding today's new music scene.

Virtuoso guitarist and composer Ben Monder has stretched, altered and reconstructed the definition of Jazz guitar, lending his own unique sound to the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and the Paul Motian Octet, among others. Monder also performs his original music internationally with his own quartet, trio, and in a duo project with vocalist Theo Bleckmann.

As a multi-faceted artist, educator and activist, Fred Ho has pioneered works for dance, theater, and multimedia, interweaving tradition with novelty and free form Jazz. The Brooklyn-based saxophonist and composer joins David Garland to share his music and talk about his many multicultural pursuits — which include leading the Monkey Orchestra, the Afro Asian Music Ensemble, and the production company Big Red Media Inc.
Fred Ho premieres his Bari Sax Concerto "When the Real Dragons Fly!" at Zankel Hall with the American Composers Orchestra on November 14th.
