New Sounds Live
2006-2007 Concert Season
The 20th annual concert series hosted by John Schaefer
This 20th annual New Sounds Live concert series is shaping up to be a smorgasbord of delights, starting with the opening concert at the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden
on November 1st. Three incredible artists from three different parts of the world – Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Yungchen Lhamo (Tibet), and Susan McKeown (Ireland) – all now resident of New York, share a bill called “The World in New York.”
November 10th heralds the world premiere of a WNYC commission by Phil Kline called “John the Revelator,” which uses the vaulted ceilings of the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden for cathedral-like effect. Kline’s piece features both the early music group Lionheart and the string quartet Ethel. Mid-month, on November 15th, Irish composer Daniel Figgis presents a new instrumental song cycle, “Post-Production,” written for the New Sounds Live series at the World Financial Center
“Gloryland,” the collaborative project between Anonymous 4 and fiddler Darol Anger comes to Merkin Hall on December 7, for a New Sounds Live concert presentation. Then there’s another installment of the silent film music series coming to the World Financial Center's Winter Garden in February of 2007 (7-9), as the esteemed Alloy Orchestra, purveyors of the rack of junk, return to perform in front of the screen. Look forward to percussion-heavy accompaniment to films as varied as The General, Valentino's The Eagle, and Hitchcock's Blackmail.
The final concert of the season is on March 28th, 2007 at Merkin Hall, when the Scandinavian vocalists of Trio Medieval deliver ballads from England, France and Norway. Plus, on the same night, Irish composer and technological innovator Donnacha Dennehy leads the Crash Ensemble in a collaboration with leading sean-nos singer Iarla O'Lionaird.
All of the concerts,
hosted by John Schaefer, will be taped for future broadcast on WNYC.
