Experience a post-classical / post-rock pairing when Rachel's and Clogs perform at Merkin Hall on Thursday, May 25, 2006. John Schaefer hosts this New Sounds Live double bill of indefinability, featuring the mostly instrumental chamber rock group Clogs and indie rock orchestra of “subversives with a cello” Rachel’s, accompanied by live video, triggered from the stage. Bonus introductions and interviews with host John Schaefer will be taped from the stage for later broadcast on New Sounds.
Rachel’s
has inspired numerous attempts to describe the band, resulting in phrases like "the foremost purveyors of forlorn and lamentatious orchestral arrangements in the indie world." Rachel's describes themselves as a collective of friends who share the desire to explore ideas together without manifestos or genre biases. Rachel's has toured North America and Europe, appearing in libraries, churches, rock dungeons, ballrooms, bowling alleys and movie theaters. The band is made up of Christian Frederickson (viola and laptop sounds), Edward Grimes (drums/keyboards), Rachel Grimes (piano/keyboards), Greg King (films/vibes), Eve Miller (cello) and Jason Noble (guitar, bass and sampler). Clogs
Clogs excels in free improvisation, a rare feat for a classically-trained chamber group. At once familiar and alien, comical and disquieting, soothing and overwrought, Clogs's music walks a fine line between radiance and darkness. Clogs's unique blending of rock improvisation with romantic lyricism, modernist and folk elements has allowed the band to create a personal musical vernacular, a discrete concept that transcends category. Clogs is Bryce Dessner (guitar), Rachael Elliott (bassoon), Thomas Kozumplik (percussion) and Padma Newsome (violin/viola).
