WNYC and NPR present: A New Era in New York: Lorin Maazel and the New York Philharmonic
Live from Avery Fisher Hall
WNYC presents the opening concerts of the 161st season of the New York Philharmonic as Lorin Maazel begins his tenure as the orchestra's new music director. Featured will be the world premiere of a September 11 commission from John Adams: On the Transmigration of Souls. Maazel also marks the occasion with a stirring performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Joining the orchestral are soprano Marina Mescheriakova, mezzo-soprano Jill Grove, tenor Michael Schade, bass Rene Pape, and the New York Choral Artists, Joseph Flummerfelt, conductor.
Also, don't miss the latest episode of Mad About Music, when WNYC’s Gilbert Kaplan presents an exclusive interview with Lorin Maazel recorded on July 23 in Munich at his home studio.
