New Sounds Live
2004-2005 Concert Season
The 18th and 19th annual concert series hosted by John Schaefer
The New Sounds Live concert series kicks off this September at Merkin Concert
Hall, presenting a pair of works with a timely political focus. On
Tuesday, September
28, Phil Kline's "Zippo Songs," art songs for rock band and the musical equivalent of
a kick to the gut, are paired with Scott Johnson's samplings
of the vocal
cadences of political commentator I.F. Stone, featuring performances by Ethel,
Theo Bleckmann and both composers.
Don't miss "The Author Project," with One Ring Zero, authors Rick
Moody, Paul
Auster and Siri Hustvedt at the World Financial Center, right after election day, on November 3.
Plus, the exotic jazz of The Either/Orchestra's Ethiopian Suite fills the World
Financial Center on November 12. There's also a live performance of
William Duckworth's
mammoth interactive multimedia internet music project, "Cathedral," on November 17.
In January 2005, the long-awaited winter film series returns to the
World Financial
Center featuring silent films set to innovative and energetic scores
by the ClubFoot
Orchestra. Finally, the season wraps up in February 2005 at the Bang On A Can
People's Commissioning Fund concert, with the new 2004 Commissions by Cynthia
Hopkins, Carla Kihlstedt and Jim Thirwell, at Merkin Hall. All of the concerts,
hosted by John Schaefer, will be taped for future broadcast on WNYC.
