WNYC
will broadcast live the London
Symphony Orchestra's Centennial Celebration performance of an all-Sibelius
program from Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series in Avery Fisher Hall. An exclusive interview with Principal Conductor Sir Colin Davis by John
Schaefer, host of WNYC's Soundcheck and New
Sounds, will air during intermission.
This special presentation kicks off WNYC's celebration of the 100th Anniversary of one of the world's finest orchestras. The station plans to feature the LSO on Soundcheck and on its music programs over the course of the orchestra's year-long, worldwide centennial.
The
live broadcast will offer a rare opportunity to hear Davis, a renowned expert
on Sibelius, lead this legendary orchestra in a program comprised of one of
the Finnish composer's best-known symphonies (No. 5), one of his least known
(No. 3), and the symphonic poem En Saga, which powerfully conveys the spirit
of Finnish folk legends.
Other special WNYC programming honoring the LSO's anniversary include the following:
- On Thursday,
January 15, Sedgwick Clark, editor of the online magazine Musical America,
will join Soundcheck to discuss the ensemble's innovative LSO Live label (airing on 93.9
FM at 2pm).
-
On Monday, January 19, Soundcheck will
feature a discussion with Clive Gillinson, the orchestra's pioneering managing
director (and former cellist), as well as an interview with author/critic Richard
Morrison, who explores the LSO's groundbreaking and celebrated history in his
recently published book, Orchestra: The LSO - A Century of Triumphs and Turbulence
(airing on 93.9 FM at 2pm).
- Beginning on Tuesday, January 13th at midnight, WNYC's Evening Music and Overnight Music will feature award-winning recordings made by the orchestra on its LSO Live label (7pm-5am on 93.9 FM).
