It would be easy to talk about the obviously homeless and the almost pointed sign that says "step aside", but what intrigues me the most about this image was when I saw it for the first time I had never before thought of the subway tunnels as a place of destination, or home, rather than just a passageway. It isn't often that you're in the subway for enjoyment or even just paused. At the station you are either moving or waiting, and usually waiting eagerly, impatiently. I thought how interesting or aggravating it must be to attempt to sleep in a place filled with so much anxiety.

The photo was taken in April of 2011. I felt a sense of threat - from the expression on his face to his choice of t-shirt.
The inspiration was to capture this fear. We made eye contact. I think he was more "startled" that I wanted to take his photo, then I was about taking it.
What does it say about New York? It just shows a bit of a darker side. The presence of fear or maybe how we wrongly perceive it.

Just felt it captures the feeling of seven strangers, waiting together, shoulder-to-shoulder. It's a snapshot of life in NYC, all of us so close together, all on our way to somewhere else.

G-Line platform (2007-2008). From the series "Advertising Underground."

For almost a decade, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has derived yearly revenues upwards of $100 million from the sale of advertising in its stations, trains, and buses.

The fast and expansive growth of advertising throughout MTA's transportation system may concern those who consider advertisements effective social and cultural influencers. Still, before too much credence is given to the supposed capacity of media groups to condition people, we should look at how advertisements are actually used in MTA spaces.

"Advertising Underground" explores the language of New York City subway advertising at the end of the 2000s, and it asks whether the ways in which individuals alter ads can serve to subvert their messages or even completely empty advertisements of their meanings.

New York City is a huge network of a metropolis above the surface and and an underworld filled with dark corners and crumbling walls. This was taken on the 2 train in the Bronx. I noticed the red light and it immediately captured my attention since I felt like NYC is a city that will never stop moving because there is so much inside of it and it keeps evolving.

It's all about the timing with so many subway shots. The doomsday ad sets the scene, and we wait to see who shows up. Is she contemplating judgement day?

I really lucked out with this one, and was fortunate to have my point and shoot with me. Decent enough to get the shot, and more importantly, very discret. Where else but on a NYC subway (F train) can you find such strong characters converging on still the most effective way to get around the city? Just after I took this shot, the gentleman engaged the lady in conversation, and in yet another "only in NYC moment" the two had an animated chat, with smiles all around.

I moved to NYC in March of 2010, and I immediately became interested in subway ad defacements. Most of them were crude and/or silly, but some were clever, some skillful, some highly entertaining, some thoughtful and provoking social commentaries. I took this picture on April 15, 2010, one among several pictures of good defacements.

This photo was taken one year ago. There was only one moment when I could see this scene - the amazing light, the woman turned to the window and the recognizable view of Coney Island. That time I was working on the series "Take a Train". This picture couldn't be include in it (it looked different and I knew it at once), but my camera was ready for shot and I got one of my favorite photos.

I took this on the F train. I guess it was too cold out to ride the bike outside. New Yorkers will bring their bikes, strollers, etc. onto a train no matter how crowded it is. Then they stand in front of the door so you can't get off of the train!

I took this on the Lex line during Rush Hour. NYers all have their own style. I thin her name is Mercedes. I love the way her hair falls perfectly on her bare shoulders

I took this on the F train in the Spring of 2011 . New Yorkers love to multi-task. I imagine She just baked a cake and is reading a book on the way to her friend's house

This was taken on the Lex line in the spring of 2011. I always take pictures of interesting people on the way to work. I imagine who these people are, never knowing who they really are. This man looks like he is visiting NYC, but he is not a permanent resident

This photo was taken on the Lex line during the winter of 2011. I often see people sleeping on the train, making themselves at home, sometimes hiding themselves and escaping NY.
