It was taken last year on october 13th on the way home from bringing our dog to Brighton Beach. (Dogs are allowed after October 1st!). It was inspired by the light and the colors. I'd been watching the traffic lights change (in the background, under the tracks), and realized they were beautiful against the warm tutti-frutti (multi-layered colors) sunset and the yellow safety strip on the platform. I had to choose this one out of three because the lady in the photo made it plain that she didn't want to be in the photo, but she added to it with her structured trenchcoat, so I used this one, which keeps her anonymous.

It says that New York has everything: light, beauty, a beach sunset, traffic, colors, graffiti, people...

What is behind those locked doors? How old is the equipment? What makes the subway go?

Experimenting with a new feature on my camera I wanted to capture some of the vibrant colors found in a subway station.

For the past few years I've been documenting these subway poster defacings in a blog. www.SubwayDeface.com This ephemeral street art make subway rides more fun, and actually turn some boring posters into cool and interesting objects to look at.

These hundreds of layers of paint that are so commonly found in the stations are so amazing. Like the rings on a tree trunk, they show passage of time.

I love these old NYC Transit Authority Logos that you can still find in between the cars of the older trains. In a graphic design sense, they're kind of lame, but in this context of all this worn hardware, it looks beautiful.

Some of these old Brooklyn outside stations have so much character to them. Standing in them sometimes makes you feel you're in a movie. This is the 18Ave stop on the N.

This was shot not too long ago at Penn Station. This is America's shame what we do with those who cannot take care of themselves. We were all on a platform going somewhere and this poor soul had nowhere to go.

I was commuting to work about a year ago and was so struck by these two. Their interactions were so funny--I think the mom and son shared some DNA--they seemed like an equal match.

This photograph was taken in Vienna on the way out of the subway station. It was the evening and this man seemed like he was having an out of body experience. I thought perhaps he was tired from a long days work but it seemed like he carried a weight bigger than that. I found his lack of desire to move while on a machine that was making him move to be ironic so I snapped this photo.

Last May I've visited NY and had 3 inspiring weeks full of photography excitement.
After a lovely evening out with a friend, we started taking pictures at the Astoria Subway station, with the view on Queensborough bridge. This is one of the outcomes. For me it shows the movement in the city, but also the little sequences of silence. I call it "rush & hush" :)
