This photo was taken on the Lexington line at 7am on my way to work in 2011. Many women have make up their faces on the subway. What is usually an intimate project becomes quite a public display.

Personal pain. It can break your heart.

Getting out can make you realize how deep down the subway is in a lot of places!

The recession has hit NYC and there are signs of it everywhere, particularly in the subway where services are disappearing.

So many wonderful family portraits on the subway! We are really lucky, if we just see and just look.

An old photo from the late 70s or early 80s when homeless people would spread out and occupy a good part of the seating and people would just ride along without being bothered. Democracy in the subway!

I made this photo many years ago when it was permissible for tobacco companies to advertise in the subway. I just new that one day there would be no Marlboro signs and the beautiful mechanical equipment, rich green, would be gone, as are tokens. I am sure that many viewers of these photos do not even know what a token is.

Times Square. 2007. It's interesting how the trains scream into the station and when they depart strangers have disappeared as though by magic.
