After I finished my PhD and separated from my husband, I moved to a new town with almost nothing. I had my grandmother's silver, a folding table, and an office chair. Oh, and of course my books and my laptop. I started to accumulate furniture from various places and decided I would make my own headboard out of pieces of wood I found in the neighborhood. While attaching it to the wall, I realized I had set it up so a huge knot was at the back. Trying to chisel off the knot, I drove a knife into the bottom of my foot (about an inch and a half, to the base of the blade). I had to call one of the few people I knew in town to take me to the emergency room because I didn't have a car.

materials: wood, brass hardware, paint, fabric.
