We pay our high school age sitter $10/hour and have hired a professional nanny for $15/hour in emergencies. We are lucky that we sometimes have family members to watch our kid. We don't hire as much as others because we have worked out a babysitting swap with another local couple who have a similarly aged toddler. We take turns babysitting for each other, sometimes at our house and sometimes at theirs. Sometimes we both kids have a playdate and then go to sleep and the babysitting parent just carries their own kid home when they leave, whatever time that is.
