I have been listening to New Sounds since moving to NYC in 1988. I have been exposed to so much good music, both new to me and familiar as well. One of my greatest memories where I was moved to tears was at the live concert and silent film based on Joan of Arc. Richard Einhorn's "Voices of Light" blew me away! I really have a very strong connection to this show and cannot imagine life without listening to his nightly program or watching live events. Thank you John Schaefer for your dedication and devotion to music and to your listeners

I have been listening to John Schafer's New Sounds program for the past twenty five years and in the whole amount of time that I have been listening to New Sounds, I have always deemed his program to be the best program I have ever heard on radio. The depth and the breadth of his program is outstanding. He has explored and presented so many genres of music from all over the world and has contributed greatly to the cultivation of music and culture taking it to the greatest depth. I have gotten such an outstanding education from John about so many different forms of music as well as some general history in relation to music. For my own personal taste, it is truly the best.

John Schafer has introduced me to so many wonderful musical artists that I probably would have never known, if it wasn't for his magnificent show (Raphael Mostel and Meredith Monk to name a few, the tip of the iceberg actually). He has also interviewed many of my musical heroes who I always enjoyed; Oregon, Brian Eno, among so many others.

Thirty years is magnificent for what I consider to be the best radio program I have ever heard. May there be thirty more years of New Sounds. Keep up the magnificent work in introducing, exploring, and presenting the wonderful music that exists all over world, John Schaefer. You have done the best job that anyone can do.

Regards,

John was interviewing my friend, composer Osvaldo Golijov, for a concert of Osvaldo's music at Lincoln Center. I had heard Osvaldo be interviewed many times (had even participated on some interviews with him, as a soloist of his work) but I had never heard Osvaldo speak the way he did with John. There was a level of comfort and understanding between the two, and Osvaldo, who is quite intelligent and charming anyway, was able to open up even more and reveal things about his process as a composer which were quite interesting and personal. John just has that depth and weight of experience and knowledge, plus a great love of music combined with his abundant humanity. There is no one like him out there.
