Listener Challenge: Photo Remix

Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor have made distinguished careers out of manipulating images: he's an old-school darkroom guy, while she's embraced the computer. For this challenge, they provided ten images for you to remix into an original composition.

Not every image has to 'tell a story.' But good images provoke the viewer's own imagination into discerning some kind of meaning, however surreal. That, and I love visual puns.

This remix is called "Tree of Life". My creative process went as follows;
first I decided to avoid any preconceived ideas, (such as looking at other submitted compositions). I would just look at the ten photos, taking from them whatever visual thoughts occurred to me. After about 15 seconds, the word
"tree" popped into my mind and I saw that many of the photos had some relationship to trees ... the bird & butterfly rest at times in trees, the girl & man photos could be part of a family tree, the guitar is made of wood from trees, the sky & path photos included groups of trees. Only the hand & marble head did not have even a tangential connection to trees. From there I thought of the "Tree of Life" and decided to use as many of the photos as possible to make a tree representing the connectedness of all life. I did not have any particular image in mind of what the finished composition would look like ... I just let it evolve and the image eventually included part of all ten photos in one shape or another.
As I have zero Photoshop skills, I used Excel 2007 to manipulate the photos. A really fun creative exercise ... Thanks!

The overall collage is a bit dark in palette and mood juxtaposed to the light pastel tones of the flowers and butterflies. I used several filters and adjustment layers to create the textures in PS. A fun exercise.

This is a variation on the first submission of chosen images made into a ceramic plate.
This one is a truer kaleidoscope than the first, however the first is somehow easier to look at. I like them both. I am thankful we can submit more than one image. Thanks.

I like to kaleidoscope images. One of these images included a ceramic plate. Choosing from the images, putting them together to create a ceramic plate gave me a lot of joy.

Elephant Rescue. This is an image of an imaginary rescue from poachers to safer grounds. The lone butterfly is on it's way to bring the last elephant to safety.

AstralPop KARAOKE App
Photo Remix for Studio360

Here's a spiritual version starting with a psychic hand gesture. The ravens dream of a butterfly. The sky is windy and tumultuous. The rays of light emanate from the life energy of their butterfly prey. It is the food for their psyche and causes a metamorphosis or transmogrification of their souls.

I chose one image, and then tiled the other images to recreate it. Zoom in to see detail. It is truly inspiring to be able to create such artwork with such unique photos.
