We use a high school friend of family for after school help on the days I work to help husband with dinner and homework and we pay her $10 hour. Then I use college students for evenings out and pay $15 which I round up to nearest 10. Also pay my adult sister $15 sometimes for day or night sitting. Would like to use them all more but too expensive for us. (teacher and college professor. )
Two things keep us from hiring a babysitter more often: 1) My husband has gone back to school after his employer cut positions. We don't have so much disposable income.
2) Our son goes to preschool for 8+ hrs/day during the week. We don't often want to have someone else caring for him even MORE of the week.
the cost of going out to dinner, even in pittsburgh, has become prohibitive ($14 glasses of wine, etc.) . . . . so we have gone out much less. 2.5 year old boy, 6 year old girl
Our second choice after our high junior neighbor is an older woman, around 40, who has babysitting as a legitimate part of her income. We usually end up paying her closer to $11 or $12 a hour, which becomes pretty expensive on a 6pm until midnight evening.

We just moved to Northern NJ from central Va. Down south the kids across the street watched our sons for years, they practically grew up together. But here it has been impossible to find anyone to sit for us. The neighborhood is quite affluent and it appears that high school kids just don't work while they're in school. I would happily pay 12-15 dollars an hour if someone was interested. We utilize the grandparents when we're desperate.
