I work for a place that digitizes old media. If you have old reels of film, videos, or photos lying hiding in a closet making them digital can be a really touching gift. We have lots of people come in with footage their family has never seen or haven't revisited in years. It's great to be able to relive old memories around the holidays and preserve them for future generations.

For my bithday last month my sister bought for me the services of an at-home private yoga instructor whom she found thru yelp.com

I'm awaiting my 8th hour session this afternoon. i began three + weeks ago as a complete yoga "newbie" - an aching, active 57 year old new yorker. I am now a complete convert and love the personal attention which makes each session so much more productive and enjoyable than trying to keep up in a class.

This is the BEST gift I've ever received!

I sell handmade cases and sleeves for iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires on Etsy. This is a great place for WNYC holiday shoppers because they could get very cute and functional gifts for the techies in their lives, and at the same time, support a local employer (Etsy, which is based in Brooklyn), and support a local designer/crafted. My store websites are:

www.Etsy.com/shop/belvidesigns

Thank you.

A quiet beautiful horseback ride in Prospect Park - $37 for one hour per person, no experience required. Many people are not aware that the stables are open every day, the horses need exercise all year round. Winter riding is so peaceful, snow is gorgeous especially on horseback, the park is at it's quietest, the horses love it.

About 15 years ago, my mother requested that we exchange experiences, rather than gifts. My gift to her was the NYC premier, at BAM, of Nixon in China. Though a lover of classical opera, she had no experience of the contemporary variant. She said nothing until, as we were leaving, she reach up and squeezed my arm, and sang out, "New experience. New experiences!! That is what life must be about!!!" She died several years after, but when I remember her, that's what I remember most happily: her face shining, and her voice carolling, "NEW EXPERIENCES!"

For the harried housewife or close friend with lots of small children:
Offer to clean their fridge, microwave or stove for the holidays. Works well for A type personalities with B type friends in need of a break instead of more stuff in their life.

Printed Matter at 195 10th Avenue in Chelsea specializes in artists' books, and it is a wonderful place to find affordable works of art, limited edition books, posters, and objects. Lots of gifts under $25, but a wide range of prices. Where else can the 99% afford works by Barbara Kruger, Matthew Barney, Kiki Smith, and more?

If you have to ask...

We have been scrimping and saving for many years and only snowboarding during Presidents weekin New Hampshire at a family friendly little place called Crotched Mountain (which I highly recommend). This year we decided we could afford to take our son and his friend to Heavenly Valley as part of his holiday gift. We're also paying for his friend's lift ticket. He has no clue how really huge this will be compared to Crotched Mountain. Fortunately, our son will be only 5 days away from no longer being eligible for the much cheaper child's lift ticket -- which saves us over 50%

For the less expensive family friendly snowboarding vacation nearer to home, Crotched Mountain is great. All the staff are very helpful and the lift tickets are inexpensive.

Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Inc. or Cresli offers INCREDIBLE whale watching and coastal ecosystem tours off Long Island. Generally they begin in July but have tours all years. It is reasonably priced and can be a three day cruise on a rustic ship.

My first job out of college was working for an antiques store in Bryn Mawr, PA. The owners were music professors at Temple University. There was a grand piano in the back of the store, concealed from shoppers, but visible to me, as one of two employees who worked at the store. But the owners would never play the piano in my presence. Then, on Christmas Eve, just as one of the owners, Harvey, and I were closing the shop for the night, I heard the most beautiful music coming from the back of the store. It was Harvey, playing a classical composition, just for me. It was the best Christmas present I ever received.

Owl & Thistle is a perfect store for gifts for others & yourself really, as it's so hard to go in and not get something. It's owned by Keri, who sources everything herself, and even better it's in a neighborhood that is not at all full of cute gift stores (at least yet) in crown heights), so it's really been a great local go-to place.

Go to numerous craft markets, support the independent artists, craftsman, makers, get the story behind each unique product, and connect on a personal level. It's so much more satisfying than the 'made in faceless elsewhere' sea of 'stuff'.

Try to support your small local shops, instead of going to the big guys - not only more $ will stay in the local area, but also think that by shopping there you're supporting your neighborhood, as the little great store being there adds so the the whole vibe of the area.

I don't understand people skipping the small stores, driving to the big boxes, but then also complaining when small stores close up, and big boxes move into their neighborhood. It takes away from the charm, and less $ stays in the area, since profits go into the corporate overlords. Really try to think local.
