Dolphin Spotted Swimming in East River

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 - 06:06 PM

A dolphin has been attracting attention along the East River.

It was spotted Wednesday off the FDR Drive and East 96th Street in Manhattan.

A staff member of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says the dolphin does not appear to be injured.

She says the foundation's executive director, Rob DiGiovanni, is headed to the scene. He'll join officials at the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The foundation staff member says officials want to see what kind of dolphin it is and assess its health.

She says it appears to be a bottlenose dolphin.

NYPD harbor units also were at the scene.

Dolphins are seen in New York City's waters from time to time.

In January, an ill and aging dolphin died in Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal.
