Kingsbridge Armory Project in Limbo, Following Delays

Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx (New York City's Economic Development Corporation)

Time is running out for one of the Bloomberg administration's signature economic development projects.  After several delays, the city still has not picked a developer for the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx.

The Armory is a 575,000-square foot red-brick castle that’s been vacant for over a decade.

Last January, with much fanfare, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the city would solicit bids for the space. He called it “the most talked-about empty building in the Bronx” and said jobs would be created.

But now a year has passed and there have been few announcements from the mayor's office or the Economic Development Corporation.

Patrick Muncie, a spokesman with the EDC said, “We continue to make progress towards a selection for this important site, which will lead to the creation of jobs and generate economic investment in the Bronx.”

Little time remains for the Bloomberg administration to steer its choice through the lengthy, and sometimes fractious, public review process. The Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) involves the borough president, community boards, and other players, and will take seven months at minimum to complete.

The next Mayor takes office in January 2014.

An earlier effort to develop the Armory fell apart because of disagreements over wages for workers at the site.
