Automatic Spending Cuts Could Delay Re-Opening of Statue of Liberty: U.S. Parks Dept.
Tuesday, February 26, 2013 - 06:51 PM
The reopening of the Statue of Liberty could be further delayed if automatic budget cuts go into effect on Friday.
Liberty and Ellis Island have been closed to the public and without power since Sandy.
Outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar spoke Tuesday after reviewing damage on the islands.
Congress approved the National Park Service's request for $59 million as part of last month's Sandy relief package, but the automatic spending cuts could result in staff losses, and ultimately, delays.
“It’s going to slow down the processing of contracts which are needed in order for us to be able to move forward with the docks, with the security measures, as well as the other improvements that need to be made,” Salazar said.
Salazar said even after the islands reopen, the cuts could lead to fewer operating days during the week.

i have a small home bass hand crochet business such as bags, dolies which is all made by myself and will like to sell on statue of liberty. how do i go about it
This government is so full of themselves. WASTE MONEY is all they do. Here is a great example, they have a lady here in New York, from another state, I think it is Florida, claiming to be in charge of the restoration. WHAT! I looked into this a little deeper. This is a fact, the Government sent this person, to New York to watch Lady Liberty. I spoke to some people who have been working on the island who have confirmed this. SO OUR GOVERNMENT IS PAYING TO HAVE THIS PERSON STAY IN NEW YORK, paying probably $5,000 to $6,000 for an apt, transportation, A CAR! (who the hell needs a car in Manhattan). So let’s see the math, 6 months at $5,000.00= $30,000.0, plus power. A car rental, (what $300 per week) $7,200.00. What is more frustrating, is she made a comment to a staff member that she has people coming to visit her from Florida. So out taxes are paying for vacations as well?
NO WONDER WHY OUR GOVERNMENT IS MESSED UP! THIS IS JUST 1 PERSON OR ITEM THEY ARE WASTING MONEY ON. THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER PERSON TO HANDLE LADY LIBERTY FROM THE GOVENMENT. This going to get worse before it gets better, not speaking about Lady Liberty, talking about the entire government and economy. It will get much worse.
Why bother to have national monuments. I planned a trip to Washington DC to see White House and other monuments and then to NY to see Statue of Liberty. Now the two bigest power cities in the United States can not help Parents teach their children about the government through tours. So what they are learning is that since our government does not know how to manage its money, we do not get to see what they are doing. Weird. At least we can visit the House of Representatives. Perhaps we will just pass on New York. We could just stay in California and go to Yosemite AGAIN or do we allow nature to suffer too at the hand of government inability to balance and budget. Hmmm
