Theater: What to Watch Before Winter is Over

While spring may be the busiest time in the world of New York theater, this winter has provided stage-lovers with plenty to see.
Three major star-powered Broadway revivals opened in January, and there are a handful of off-Broadway performances worth note.
Adam Feldman, theater critic with Time Out New York, says for a great night of musical theater, you can't do much better than some of the city's cabaret shows.
"I think of them often as theatrical one-man shows," he said. "The newest place in town is very theatrically oriented. It's called 54 below, it's downstairs from the old Studio 54, and this month, mid- February, Patti LuPone is going to be there for 2 weeks."
Elisabeth Vincentelli, theater critic with the New York Post, says one show to catch before it closes is the musical Annie. "I think Annie is often taken for granted, you know, the cute show with the orphan, but this one is really beautiful production, it's really elegant" she said.

I'm afraid that wishful thinking made me misstate the length of LuPone's run at 54 Below; it will actually be for a single week, not for two weeks. Happily, though, there are many other worthy cabaret shows to catch at 54 Below as well as other local joints like Joe's Pub, the Café Carlyle, the Metropolitan Room, the Cutting Room and the Duplex.
I'm a theatre fan (and reviewer) and often my favorite performances in cabarets. They can be wonderfully intimate and quite moving. The Oak Room and Feinsteins were fabulous venues (and hopefully at least one of them will rise from the proverbial ashes.) If you're looking for something a wee bit easier on the wallet than 54 Below; Birdland, The Metropolitan Room and Don't Tell Mama are fun, festive and full of surprises.
