A&P is selling its Manhattan Food Emporium supermarkets.

The Montvale, New Jersey-based A&P plans to "market these 16 Manhattan stores to a variety of prospective buyers."

The company, which owns 320 supermarkets, started the process in early September.

"The Food Emporium represents a unique footprint that requires a specific go-to-market strategy," a spokesperson for A&P said in a statement. The sale will allow the company to focus on its long-term vision of being the best food and drug store in the neighborhoods it serves, she added.

A&P also owns a Food Emporium in New Canaan, Conn. (which is not for sale) as well as Pathmark, Waldbaum's, Superfresh and Food Basics stores. It emerged from bankruptcy in March with 75 fewer stores.
