The man in charge of federally funded medical research will be touring NYU Langone Medical Center Friday to look at damage caused by Sandy.

Dr. Francis Collins is head of the National Institutes of Health, which funds almost $200 million worth of research at NYU — on everything from cancer genetics to oral health.

Hospital officials say they’re still cataloging all the lost research. For example, 10,000 specially bred mice and rats were killed in flooding at the height of the storm.

NYU officials are hoping the NIH will find special funding to replace damaged equipment and labs and get countless research projects back on track.
