Development of at-risk coastal areas in New York and New Jersey has been on the rise even as the potential for a storm surge increases, according to one report.
Speaking on the Brian Lehrer Show on Tuesday, Huffington Post reporter John Rudolf said politicians have a hard time saying no to seaside development.
Rudolf singled out New Jersey as a state with "very little interest" in telling residents not to build in flood-prone areas.
"It was basically sort of a laissez faire, do what you will, and I think we're seeing some of the consequences right now," he said.
Rudolf's most recent piece is on the history of waterfront development in the region.
