Brooklyn Councilman Lew Fidler announced his candidacy for the state Senate on Monday, seeking to win the 27th district seat vacated by embattled former state Senator Carl Kruger, who resigned and plead guilty to corruption charges last month.
"I believe that I can bring back people's faith in common sense government that they can trust, based upon the ten year record I have in the council of getting things done," Fidler said.
Fidler made his announcement on the steps of City Hall on Monday.
"You've got to challenge what's been done before to finally change the dysfunction that has occurred in the past," he said in a statement following the formal announcement.
The 27th state Senate district includes Flatbush, Mill Basin and Coney Island, Brooklyn.
A special election for the seat will be held on March 20.
Fidler's expected to face David Storobin, a lawyer and vice chairman of the Brooklyn Republican Party, in the special election.
