City to Release 9/11 Info on Officers at Ground Zero

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 - 01:38 PM

The city will soon release information on police officers who served at the World Trade Center in the days and months after September 11.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the main police union, wants the names of officers present and those who have contacted cancer over the last decade. Previously, the city said it would turn that over, eventually, after experts analyze the data.

Now, the city is agreeing to give all the names to Mt. Sinai Hospital, which is leading much of the 9/11-related health research.

The city also says it will turn over the cancer information on individual officers — after contacting them or their families to get permission to do so.

This is very vague. Will the NYPD release just the names without cancer information prior to obtaining a release. Or will the names and cancer information be provided only after all the releases are compiled, which can take months. Also if NYPD has cancer data per patient doesn't that mean a release by the patient was already provided.
