William Glaberson reports: “New York has been among the most aggressive states in trying to protect homeowners from foreclosure, granting new legal protections and turning courts across the state into teeming negotiation centers working to keep people in their homes.”

Malloy Urges New Tenure Rules for Connecticut Teachers (NYT)
Peter Applebome reports: “Gov. Dannel P. Malloy proposed a broad set of education initiatives, including major changes to teacher tenure, on Wednesday in his second State of the State address, a speech that found his efforts split between unfinished business from his first year in office and a new agenda for his second.”

Alleged Child Molester Tooks Kids on Field Trips (NY Post)
Jessica Simeone, Yoav Gonen, and Franz Koster reports: “The Brooklyn teachers aide who allegedly took photos and videos of himself molesting students in a classroom has spent nearly the last two decades with unsupervised access to young boys, including overnight trips. Taleek Brown, 41, brought members of his Freestylers dance troupe on camping trips and weekend visits to his mom’s house in Pennsylvania, parents said.”

Heather Haddon reports: “Advocates heading into an 11th-hour push to legalize gay marriage in New Jersey are facing a vastly altered fund-raising landscape since their original unsuccessful effort in 2009.
This time, gay-rights supporters have more political support but less money on hand. One powerful group, the Gill Action Fund, isn't directly giving money in New Jersey this time around, after having raised $1 million for the 2009 effort, according to people familiar with their spending.”

Accused Cop Killer Lamont Pride Admits Pulling Trigger (NBC New York)
NBC New York reports: “The man accused of shooting and killing a veteran NYPD officer at point-blank range in December said in videotaped statements obtained exclusively by NBC New York that he pulled the trigger by accident, explaining: ‘I was so nervous and I panicked.’”

Amazon Weighs NJ Warehouse Deal That Could Bring 1,500 Jobs (AP)
The Associated Press reports: “Amazon.com, the world's biggest online retailer, is in talks to bring two warehouses to New Jersey in a deal that could bring 1,500 or more full-time jobs to a state where unemployment has hovered around 9 percent.”

EDUCATION
Official: NJ, Nine Other States Get Waiver for No Child Left Behind Law (Bergen Record)
Leslie Brody reports: “The Associated Press said Thursday that New Jersey was one of 10 states to win a waiver, and that federal officials would make the announcement shortly. The other nine states to receive the waivers are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Tennessee.”
