A survey by the website Bankrate.com confirms what New Yorkers may have already noticed when withdrawing cash from an out-of-network ATM: fees are going up.
New York has the fifth-highest ATM fees of major American cities, following Denver, San Diego, Houston and Seattle.
The survey also found fewer banks are offering free checking accounts: 45 percent, down from 76 percent two years ago.
Bankrate's survey included only bank ATM fees, and not the fees charged by the non-bank cash machines commonly seen in delis.
"Some smaller banks as well as online banks can have ATM reimbursement policies and in both of these cases it really serves to level the playing field against the larger competitors," said Bankrate's Greg McBride.
The average fee in New York City is now $2.60 — 20 cents higher than the national average.
