Vote Expected on Rezoning of Boerum Hill

New York –
New York City Council votes today on whether the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn should get rezoned.
The council vote is the last step in the rezoning process, that could help protect the neighborhood's brownstones.
Howard Kolins, president of the Boerum Hill Association, said, "The ultimate goal of rezoning is to protect and preserve the type of housing and quality of life that exists. it's a low rise, very green very leafy streets."
Residents rallied for stricter zoning laws after the Atlantic Yards project moved forward in nearby Fort Greene. The plan strives to keep as much contextual zoning as possible for Boerum Hill. That is, to preserve the low rise brownstone character of the neighborhood.
Without the zoning change, Boerum Hill would stay zoned R6. That type of zoning allows builders to construct tower apartment buildings, that would be inconsistent with much of the Boerum Hill neighborhood.
The rezoning area includes all or part of the blocks bounded by Atlantic Avenue to the north, 4th Avenue to the east, Warren and Wyckoff streets to the south, and Court Street to the west.

The Atlantic Yards project is being built in what is more accurately called Prospect Heights, not Fort Greene.
