FDNY Discrimination Suit Heads Back to Court

Representatives for the city and a group charging the FDNY with discrimination are due back in court Thursday. The Center for Constitutional Rights is expected to deliver a list of potential candidates for a court-appointed monitor to oversee the department's hiring practices.
Federal judge Nicholas Garaufis ruled earlier this month that an independent monitor was needed. He has also ruled that previous FDNY entrance exams discriminated against minorities.
The city's law department has said it will appeal the judge's ruling seeking an independent monitor.
The FDNY has made a big push this year to increase applicant numbers for a redesigned test early next year.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg also vocally defended the city's latest recruiting efforts earlier this month. He noted that the city has attracted more than 61,000 applicants — nearly half of them minorities — for the upcoming exam.
