Officials Reach Agreement on How to Reduce Sewer Overflows in NY Waters
Wednesday, October 19, 2011 - 12:31 PM
New York State and city environmental officials have reached an agreement to reduce sewer overflows into area water bodies.
The city will invest $187 million by 2015 in so-called green infrastructure projects like street tree pits and porous pavement to hold storm water and keep the runoff from entering city sewers, which empty into local waterways when it rains and the system's capacity is reached.
The city will also complete work on $1.6 billion in improvements to the wastewater treatment infrastructure.
A public comment period on the proposal begins Wednesday and runs through November 18.
