New York City is one step closer to restricting on-street parking — in at least some neighborhoods — to residents.

The City Council voted Thursday in favor of implementing a residential parking permit system.

But it will be up to Albany to decide whether New York City would be allowed to craft rules for such a system.

Democratic lawmakers who represent neighborhoods near the future Barclays Center basketball arena in Brooklyn have proposed a residential parking permit bill, but it faces opposition by some Republicans in the state Senate.

The Bloomberg administration has also expressed concerns. Other cities including Washington D.C., Boston and Jersey City already have a  residential parking system in place.
