One of the largest Polish American communities in the northeast — Greenpoint, Brooklyn — is celebrating the beatification of the late Pope John Paul II, who was Polish.
A local contingent of about 40 members from Greenpoint even traveled to Rome to see the beatification firsthand. Michael Pajak, president of the New York Chapter of the John Paul II Foundation, said his community has been looking forward to the pope becoming a saint since he died six years ago.
"We all, especially Poles, have him so close to their hearts and we dream about it and the dream came true," he said.
For those who couldn't travel to Rome, masses took place throughout the city in honor of the beatification.
