City's Pools Make a Splash on Opening Day

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 - 03:44 PM

The city's public pools are officially open for summer.

Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe led dozens of children in a countdown to the first splash of the season at the Mullaly Park pool in the Bronx Wednesday morning.

A last-minute budget deal saved four pools facing closure and prevented the season from being cut short by two weeks, Benepe said. Now, all 54 pools — which host nearly 50,000 people daily — will be open for the full season through Labor Day.

The city will also offer early morning and evening lap swims, swim lessons and free meals for children at the pool sites.
