Assembly OKs Bill That Allows Livery Cars to Pick Up Street Hails

The state Assembly voted 110-28 on Tuesday to allow livery drivers to pick up passengers who hail them in the outerboroughs and Upper Manhattan despite protests from yellow cab drivers who protested the legislation in Albany.
Republican Senator Martin Golden, who represents Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, told dozens of protesting cabbies waving their medallions, that talks with Mayor Michael Bloomberg are still ongoing.
Yellow cab drivers who own medallions or lease taxis with medallions said they're afraid they will lose customers to livery cabs, and believe they own the right to pick up passengers hailing rides on the street.
The city said it has 13,000 yellow taxis, but many lawmakers complain they rarely see them in the outer boroughs.
