Protesters Gather in Halls of Capitol as Republicans Weigh Same-Sex Marriage Vote

Monday, June 20, 2011 - 12:56 PM

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the halls of New York's Capitol on Monday as Senate Republicans continued to weigh whether to vote on same-sex marriage.

Clergy-led groups opposing same-sex marriage sang hymns and prayed in small circles as pro-marriage advocates sang "God Bless America" and jammed the halls and parlor outside the Senate chamber.

Republicans met behind closed doors on Monday and could call for a floor vote as early as today. The Assembly already passed it, and Governor Andrew Cuomo pledged his support.
