President Obama on Rep. Weiner: 'Should Probably Step Back'
Monday, June 13, 2011 - 06:51 PM
President Barack Obama commented for the first time on Rep. Anthony Weiner's sex scandal saying if he were in Weiner's place, he would resign.
Obama, speaking on Monday, said that Weiner's behavior was "highly inappropriate" and that the congressman, who sent lewd photos and sexual text messages to several women, embarrassed himself, his wife and his family.
The president did not call for Weiner to resign, but said in an interview for NBC's "Today Show" that when a politician can no longer serve effectively, "then you should probably step back."
Weiner has requested a leave of absence from the House so he can enter rehab for an unspecified illness.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has called for an ethics investigation to determine whether Weiner violated any House rules. On Saturday she said Weiner should resign.
