Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that will allow the United Nations to expand its Manhattan facilities onto the public parkland adjacent to its headquarters.
The bill authorizes the city to designate a portion of state parkland between 41st and 42nd streets east of First Avenue to be used for a new facility. Funds will also be designated to add more parkland to replace space that will be lost.
The governor said the law will bring hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment to the city. The new building will house and improve security for staff.
A formal agreement has to be signed by October to transfer the land to the United Nations Development Corporation.
