A fire that broke out at Rikers Island on Sunday and injured four firefighters has forced 241 inmates to relocate to different parts of the facility, according to the city's Department of Corrections.
Everyone was evacuated from the George Motchan Detention Center before two annex modules, used for dormitory-style housing, were destroyed, said spokeswoman Sharman Stein. There were no injuries to staff or inmates.
Four firefighters suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from Mt. Sinai hospital.
The blaze erupted just after 8 p.m. in an air conditioning room and took three hours to bring under control, according to the FDNY.
The FDNY is investigating the cause of the fire.
