Donald Trump Seeks to Reopen Tavern on the Green
Thursday, January 27, 2011 - 01:34 PM
Donald Trump is hungering to take over Tavern on the Green.
The real estate mogul has reached a tentative agreement with the union that represents the storied Central Park restaurant, which closed last year after a 75-year run, according to Trump Organization vice president Ron Lieberman.
Trump will also have to reach a deal with the city, which now owns the restaurant.
"Donald Trump is a developer who has lots of good ideas; he's done an awful lot for the city," Bloomberg said during a briefing on the snowstorm Thursday. "If he's interested, and if there is a restaurant there ... we'll take a look and see then."
The eatery was once the highest grossing in the nation, but it was forced to shutter its doors in January 2010 after declaring bankruptcy.
Central Park Boathouse operator Dean Poll was given the right to reopen the restaurant by the city, but he was unable to cut a deal with the Hotel and Motel Trades Council.
