Train service on the Port Jervis Line has been suspended due to the catastrophic damage to the track and signal system caused by Tropical Storm Irene. MTA Chairman Jay Walder invoked emergency powers to rebuild large stretches of track virtually from scratch along the Port Jervis line on the Western side of the Hudson River.
Walder surveyed the damage Wednesday and called it "catastrophic" with sections of track suspended in mid-air.
The emergency powers means the authority will waive normal procurement rules to expedite the rebuilding.
Beginning Thursday, customers can take buses over to the Beacon Station and take the Hudson Line to Grand Central.
Bus service will also be available from the Harriman Station, where customers can transfer to New Jersey Transit.

Most of the region's transit network is largely back on track, although NJ Transit was experiencing frequent delays and an occasional skipped station. Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma line remains suspended between Ronkonkoma and Greenport. Metro North's Danbury line will start seeing trains Thursday morning.
